Seven Engines, One Truck: Which 2027 Ram 1500 Engine Should You Actually Buy?
Ram sells the 2027 1500 with seven engines across more than thirteen trims. That is a genuinely confusing shopping problem, and much of what you will read about it online is out of date. So here is the whole lineup, sorted, with the numbers Ram publishes and honest notes where it publishes nothing.
Is the 5.7L HEMI V8 still available in the 2027 Ram 1500?
Yes. This is the single most common piece of wrong information about this truck.
Ram announced the return of the 5.7L HEMI V8 on June 5, 2025, and Ram's CEO put it about as plainly as a car executive ever does: there is no replacement for the iconic HEMI V8. Most of the content still online was written while the V8 was out of the lineup, and it never got updated. If you have been avoiding the 1500 because you heard the V8 was dead, that reason is gone.
The 5.7L makes 395 hp and 410 lb-ft in both forms, with and without eTorque. The difference isn't power. It is capability, and the gap is bigger than most buyers expect.
What are the seven 2027 Ram 1500 engines?
| Engine | HP | Torque | Max tow | Max payload |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3.6L Pentastar V6 eTorque | 305 | 269 lb-ft | 8,100 lb | 2,340 lb (highest) |
| 5.7L HEMI V8 | 395 | 410 lb-ft | 8,890 lb | 1,150 lb |
| 5.7L HEMI V8 eTorque | 395 | 410 lb-ft | 11,370 lb | 1,680 lb |
| 3.0L Hurricane SO I6 | 420 | 469 lb-ft | 11,530 lb (highest) | 1,880 lb |
| 3.0L Hurricane HO I6 | 540 | 521 lb-ft | 9,480 lb | 1,530 lb |
| 6.4L HEMI V8 (Rumble Bee 392) | 470 | 470 lb-ft | 7,460 lb | 1,160 lb |
| 6.2L Supercharged V8 (TRX SRT) | 777 | 680 lb-ft | 8,580 lb | 1,140 lb |
Maximum tow and payload figures are for properly equipped trucks. Ram does not publish which cab, bed, axle, and package combination reaches each maximum, so treat every number here as a ceiling for one specific build rather than a rating your truck automatically carries. Ram's own marketing page currently lists the 5.7L HEMI eTorque at 11,470 lb rather than 11,370 lb; we have used the lower published figure. Either way, the Hurricane SO leads.
Which 2027 Ram 1500 engine tows the most?
The 3.0L Hurricane standard-output inline-six, at 11,530 lb. Not the V8.
That runs against every instinct a truck buyer has. A twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter six out-tows the 5.7L HEMI V8 eTorque, 11,530 lb against 11,370 lb. The margin is small, roughly 160 lb, and it is fair to call those two effectively level on towing. What is not level is the HEMI without eTorque, which tows 8,890 lb. That 2,640 lb gap is why we ask which HEMI a customer is looking at before we talk tow ratings.
The six wins on torque and where it lives. The Hurricane SO makes 469 lb-ft against the HEMI's 410, and a turbocharged engine delivers its torque low and holds it, which is exactly what you want with a trailer behind you and a grade in front of you.
What does eTorque actually do?
It is a 48-volt mild hybrid, and it is not there for fuel economy headlines. A belt-driven motor-generator replaces the alternator and adds up to 130 lb-ft on throttle tip-in, which is the moment you roll into the pedal from a stop or a slow roll.
That sounds minor until you are easing a loaded hay trailer out of a gravel yard or restarting on an uphill grade. It fills the gap before the engine is making real torque, and it smooths the auto stop-start. On the 5.7L, it is also tied to a substantially higher tow rating and roughly 530 lb more payload, which makes it far more than a comfort option.
Which Ram 1500 engine has the highest payload?
The 3.6L Pentastar V6 eTorque, at 2,340 lb. The least powerful engine in the lineup carries the most weight, and it is not close.
It should not surprise anyone. Payload is GVWR minus what the truck itself weighs, and the V6 is the lightest engine offered, so more of the truck's rated weight is left for you, your crew, and your load. The Hurricane SO is second at 1,880 lb. The 5.7L HEMI without eTorque is down at 1,150 lb.
If you are a contractor who hauls pallets, tools, gravel, and three guys, and who rarely tows anything heavier than a small equipment trailer, the base V6 is a more capable work truck than the V8 sitting next to it on the lot. That is a real conclusion, and almost nobody sells it that way.
What kind of fuel economy does the 2027 Ram 1500 get?
We do not know yet, and neither does anyone else quoting you a number.
The EPA has not published fuel economy figures for the 2027 Ram 1500. Any mpg you see attached to a 2027 truck right now is either a 2026 figure relabeled or somebody's estimate. We would rather tell you that than repeat it. When the EPA ratings post, we will update this page with them.
What this means around here. The engine question changes the moment you leave the valley floor. A truck that never sees anything harder than the run between Montrose, Delta, and Olathe during hay season can be optioned on payload and price alone. A truck that pulls a stock trailer up US-550 toward Ridgway and Ouray, or over Dallas Divide in October, is a different purchase, because a turbocharged engine holds its power at elevation far better than a naturally aspirated one. That is the strongest argument for the Hurricane, and it has nothing to do with the brochure tow rating.
What does a 2027 Ram 1500 cost?
Starting MSRP runs from the mid-$40,000s for a Tradesman up to the low $90,000s for a Tungsten, with Big Horn, Laramie, Rebel, RHO, Limited, and Longhorn filling the range between.
One honest caveat. Ram published 2027 pricing on August 31 and September 4, 2026, and sources contradict each other on whether those published MSRPs include the $2,795 destination charge. We cannot resolve it, so we will not quote a precise out-the-door number in a blog post. Call us, and we will read the actual window sticker. None of this is an offer, and pricing, incentives, and availability change constantly.
So which one should you buy?
- Daily driver that occasionally works. Hurricane SO. It has the most towing in the lineup, the second-highest payload, and 420 hp, which is more than the 5.7L HEMI makes. No configuration makes it the wrong answer.
- Towing. Hurricane SO first, at 11,530 lb. The 5.7L HEMI eTorque at 11,370 lb is close enough that if you want the V8 for the sound and the familiarity, take it with a clear conscience. Just do not buy the HEMI without eTorque and expect the same ratings.
- Payload and work. 3.6L V6 eTorque, 2,340 lb. If the yellow sticker on the door jamb is what limits your day, the cheapest engine is the right engine.
- Performance. The 6.4L HEMI 392 in the Rumble Bee makes 470 hp, and the supercharged 6.2L in the TRX makes 777. Both are built for a purpose other than towing, and their ratings show it at 7,460 lb and 8,580 lb. Buy them knowing that.
- The Hurricane HO at 540 hp is the odd one out. More power than the SO, less towing at 9,480 lb. It belongs in trucks bought for how they drive, not what they pull.
One point for the competition, because a page that claims to win on everything is not worth reading. Ford and Chevrolet both keep their half-ton engine lineups far simpler than this, and if the last few minutes have felt like homework, that simplicity is a genuine advantage. Ram's answer is that the range is why there is a 1500 that fits almost exactly what you do, instead of one that nearly fits.

Frequently asked questions
Is the 5.7L HEMI V8 still available in the 2027 Ram 1500?
Yes. Ram announced the return of the 5.7L HEMI V8 on June 5, 2025, and Ram's CEO said there is no replacement for the iconic HEMI V-8. It is offered for 2027 in both a standard form and an eTorque form, each rated at 395 hp and 410 lb-ft. Content saying the V8 has left the Ram 1500 lineup is out of date.
Which 2027 Ram 1500 engine tows the most?
The 3.0L Hurricane standard-output inline-six, at 11,530 lb when properly equipped. That is slightly more than the 5.7L HEMI V8 eTorque at 11,370 lb, and considerably more than the 5.7L HEMI V8 without eTorque at 8,890 lb. Ram does not publish which specific configuration reaches each maximum.
Which 2027 Ram 1500 engine has the highest payload?
The 3.6L Pentastar V6 eTorque, at 2,340 lb. Payload is gross vehicle weight rating minus the truck's actual curb weight, and the V6 is the lightest engine in the lineup, so more of the rating is left for cargo and passengers. The Hurricane standard-output inline-six is second at 1,880 lb.
What does eTorque do on a Ram 1500?
eTorque is a 48-volt mild hybrid system that adds up to 130 lb-ft on throttle tip-in, which is the moment you first roll into the pedal. It improves low-speed response, smooths auto stop-start, and on the 5.7L HEMI, it is tied to a significantly higher tow rating and payload than the same engine without it.
What is the 2027 Ram 1500's EPA fuel economy?
EPA fuel economy figures for the 2027 Ram 1500 are not published. Any mpg number currently attached to a 2027 Ram 1500 is either a reused 2026 figure or an estimate. We will publish the official ratings when the EPA posts them.
